  • The article focuses on research published in the April 2018 issue of "Science" concerning the role of bedrock in the nitrogen cycle. It states that a study published in "Nature" in 2011 found forest soils above sedimentary rock in some regions of California had 50 percent higher nitrogen levels than areas with igneous rock above the soil, while trees growing over sedimentary bedrock had 42 percent more nitrogen. It mentions research found weathering liberated nitrogen from rock and into soil.
