    Aún persiste la idea de que durante el siglo XVIII chileno se vivió una época de represión tanto social como moral, sobre todo en los sectores rurales de la población, los cuales se encontraban apartados de los centros urbanos importantes, en su mayoría, por opción propia. Es por esto, que el objetivo de este artículo es investigar a través de expedientes judiciales cómo el control social y la manera en que éste era ejercido por la autoridad mediante la administración de justicia influían en la población y cuáles eran los problemas que enfrentaba la corona para hacer efectivo dicho control a lo largo del siglo XVIII. La importancia de esta investigación radica en dar una mirada un poco alejada de la ya habitual historia social que rodea a los estudios sobre comunidades rurales chilenas y combinar conceptos de sociología y de historia de las mentalidades para respaldar la hipótesis.

    Still persists the idea that during the eighteenth century Chile lived a time of both social and moral repression, especially in the rural sectors of the population, where people lived separated from the main urban centers, sometimes even by their own choice. That is why the objective of this article is to investigate through judicial records how social control and the way in which it was exercised by the authority through the administration of justice influenced the population and what were the problems faced by the crown to carry on this control throughout the 18th century. The importance of this research lies in looking a bit away from the usual social history surrounding the studies on chilean rural communities and combining concepts of sociology and history of mentalities to support the hypothesis.
