Cavalieri comments on elephant poaching in Africa. Mass poaching, often by paramilitary groups using poison and automatic guns, continues unabated. Moreover, institutional cullings haven't been definitively outlawed and legal hunts are still allowed in parts of Africa. Studies indicate that, across Africa, an elephant is killed every 15 minutes. This tragedy goes beyond individual deaths. It's an attack on elephant "society" and it should be treated as such. Poaching can rip apart this society, leaving elephants more vulnerable than ever.
