The article discusses advances in the treatment of rabies. In 2004 Jeanna Giese became the first person to survive a rabies infection without having first received a vaccination. Medical College of Wisconsin professor Rodney E. Willoughby, Jr. saved Giese by inducing a coma and subsequently injecting her with antiviral agents. Other patients' experiences with this methodology of treatment are discussed.
