The article discusses the discovery that copy number variation (CNV) exists in the DNA sequences of healthy individuals. The assumption before 2004 that CNV was always directly responsible for disease, as in the case of Down syndrome, is mentioned. The subsequent association of CNV with other diseases such as autism, schizophrenia, and Crohn's disease is also noted.
