This article discusses the methods that the Kepler space telescope developed by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will use to identify extrasolar planets. The relationship between the work of this telescope and the French COROT telescope is described. Although this telescope will identify earth-sized planets, projects including the NASA Terrestrial Planet Finder and the European Space Agency Darwin mission will be capable of collecting spectroscopic data.
