  • The article discusses research into the metabolic switch that allows sled dogs to run 1,000-mile races with no apparent pain. The observation that dogs' metabolism draws energy from glycogen inside muscle cells during the initial days of a race is noted, mentioning that the metabolism then switches to a mechanism which draws energy from fat directly extracted from the blood.
