This article discusses the work of the biocatalysis and metabolic engineering professor Robert J. Lindhardt to detect and prevent the contamination of the complex carbohydrate heparin used in blood thinners. The development of a means of synthesizing heparin that improves on previous laboratory methods by inducing its production by Escherichia coli is also described.
