This article discusses research into the development of a lab-on-a-chip microfluidic device that could replace tumor biopsies for cancer patients. This system would rely on the presence of circulating tumor cells in blood samples to monitor the severity of cancer and detect its metastasis. The publication of data on this technology in the December 20, 2007 issue of "Nature" and the July 24, 2008 issue of the "New England Journal of Medicine" is described.
