This article tries to reconstruct the relationship between Nietzsche and Richard Wagner through the analysis of the concepts that the first one borrows from Schopenhauer’s philosophy and that appear in the compositions of the second one. Schopenhauer thought that music was not only the highest expression of art, but also the only discipline completely independent of the world of representation. Nietzsche uses these ideas and tries to develop and make them more complex, up to the point of being able to say that music is something necessary to awaken the Dionysian element that allows us to revitalize an increasingly decadent culture. Wagner will appear in his life as the figure of the Kantian genius capable of accomplishing this revitalization.
