Pierre Antoine Baudouin’s gouache, The Honest Model, exhibited at the Salon of 1769, immediately attracted the attention of the commentators of the event. The artist was probably addressing Diderot in the first place. He offered him an insolent reply to the unfavorable and moralizing comments on the works he had previously exposed. The scandalous audacity of Baudouin consisted in representing and publicly exhibiting a new motif extracted from the contemporary clandestine literature. The little gouache proposes an unusual type of figuration that merges the painter’s studio with the boudoir - a space for libertine consumption, specifically attributed to the privileged elites. Drawing from Les Contes of La Fontaine’s illustrations as well as from contemporary libertine literature, Baudouin offered to the spectators of the Salon a flattering mirror in which the wealthy amateur identified himself with the artist he frequented and supported

La gouache de Pierre Antoine Baudouin, Le Modèle honnête, exposée au Salon de 1769, attira aussitôt l’attention des commentateurs de l’évènement, et de Diderot en premier lieu, à qui l’artiste offrait sans doute une réponse insolente aux commentaires défavorables et moralisateurs que le critique avait adressés à l’égard des œuvres qu’il avait précédemment exposées. L’audace scandaleuse de Baudouin consistait à représenter et exposer publiquement un motif nouveau extrait de la littérature clandestine contemporaine. La petite gouache propose en effet un mode de figuration inédit qui fusionne l’atelier du peintre avec le boudoir, espace de consommation libertine, plus volontiers attribué aux élites privilégiées. Puisant autant dans l’illustration des Contes de La Fontaine que dans la littérature libertine contemporaine, Baudouin tend aux spectateurs du Salon un miroir complaisant où l’amateur fortuné s’identifie à l’artiste qu’il côtoie et qu’il soutient
