    Cada semana miles de jóvenes futbolistas entrenan en sus respectivos equipos. Durante el fin de semana compiten entre ellos en diversas categorías y se desplazan por toda la geografía catalana. Centenares de clubes, miles de equipos, decenas de miles de niños y niñas de edades comprendidas entre los 6 y los 19 años, conforman lo que venimos en llamar “fútbol base”, “fútbol formativo” o “cantera”. ¿De dónde arrancó esta frenética actividad? ¿Quiénes fueron los precursores de esta concepción del deporte a edades tan tempranas? ¿Con qué propósito se empezaron a discriminar los individuos en función de su edad? ¿Cuándo se empezó a categorizar a los equipos en función del año de nacimiento y no, por ejemplo, en función del peso como ocurre en otros deportes? ¿Con qué propósito? ¿Se trataba de formar nuevos jugadores pensando en el futuro o lo hicieron para proteger a los más jóvenes de la fuerza de los mayores? Este trabajo pretende aportar un poco de luz a estas cuestiones

    Every week thousands of young footballers are training with their respective teams. During the weekend they compete in several categories and travel through the whole of Catalonia. Hundreds of clubs, thousands of teams, ten thousands of children aged 6 to 19 years make up what we come to call “Youth Soccer”. Where does this frenetic activity started from? Who were the pioneers of this conception of sport at so early stages? What was the purpose of beginning to discriminate individuals according to their age? When did they begin to categorize teams depending on the year of birth and not, for example, on a weight basis as in other sports? What was the purpose? Were they intending to form new players thinking of the future or was it done to protect the youngest ones from the strength of bigger kids? This paper provides some light on these issues
