Cascio indicates that robot designers around the world have begun to expand our circle of empathy. And while complications are possible, in the long run this is a good thing. Most of this is superficial at present, emerging from big eyes or movements that echo appealing animal behaviors, but engineers have already begun to experiment with more complex phenomena. Ultimately, the more empathy people have for the robots they share their lives with, the better. Treating robots as companions rather than servants will benefit their relationships with increasingly sophisticated intelligent machines and with other people.
