    Frente a los castellanos, los napolitanos y lombardos, los habitantes de los Países Bajos meridionales representaron sin duda alguna el componente más numeroso de los súbditos del rey en el servicio de sus reales ejércitos.

    La intervención de estas tropas no fue relevante solo en la lucha que se desarrolló en las provincias septentrionales, sino también en los otros frentes:

    varios miles de ellos que se enviaron a engrosar las filas de las tropas que se enfrentaban a los franceses en la península ibérica, y después de 1660 hay noticia de su empleo también en la frontera de Portugal. Sin olvidar el hecho de que en las décadas siguientes muchos de ellos se encontraron luchando contra las tropas de Luis XIV no solo en los Países Bajos, sino también en Cataluña durante la guerra de Holanda (1673‑1678) y de los Nueve Años (1688‑1697).

    No obstante la preeminencia de estos soldados por su número dentro de las fuerzas armadas de la monarquía y el desarrollo que ha conocido la historia militar en los últimos veinticinco años, hay que hacer notar que ningún estudio moderno se ha dedicado a analizar y estudiar con detalle este fenómeno, y el presente trabajo pretende colmar en parte este grave vacío historiográfico analizando la contribución de las provincias leales en los conflictos de la monarquía en el transcurso del siglo xvii.

    In front of the Castilians, the Neapolitans and the Lombards, the inhabitants of the southern Netherlands undoubtedly represented the largest component of the King’s subjects in the service of their royal armies. The intervention of these troops was not only relevant in the struggle that took place in the northern provinces, but also in the other fronts: several thousand of them were sent to swell the ranks of the troops that were facing the French in the Peninsula Iberian and, after 1660 there is news of its use also in the border of Portugal. Without forgetting the fact that in the following decades many of them found themselves fighting against the troops of Louis XIV not only in the Low Country but also in Catalonia during the war of Holland (1673‑1678) and of the Nine years (1688‑1697).

    Notwithstanding the preeminence of these soldiers for their number within the armed forces of the Monarchy, and the development that military history has known in the last twenty‑five years, it should be noted that no modern study has been devoted to analyzing and studying with detail this phenomenon and this work intends to partially fill this grave historiographical gap by analyzing the contribution made by the loyal provinces in the conflicts of the monarchy during the course of the seventeenth century.
