    Resumen: “El último verano”, texto perteneciente al tercer volumen de cuentos de Amparo Dávila, Árboles petrificados (1977), es un cuidadoso relato con una de las estructuras más acendradas de la simbólica femenina: la maternidad. La fuerza del texto radica en el tratamiento que otorga a la simbólica femenina, en un ejercicio crítico que retoma la figura de la madre para llevarla a su quiebre, por medio del desmontaje de los símbolos que le sostienen, para articular, gradualmente, a la maternidad como el agente del horror en el relato. Este artículo analiza el sustrato simbólico del cuento, que convoca el carácter ambivalente del arquetipo de la madre, donde se unen los opuestos creación-destrucción, vida-muerte.

    Abstract: “El último verano” a text belonging to the third volume of tales by Amparo Dávila Árboles petrificados (1977), is shaped in the careful work with one of the most ingrained structures of the feminine symbolism: motherhood. The strength of the text lies in the treatment of the feminine symbolism, in a critical exercise that takes the figure of the mother to its breaking point, by dismantling the symbols that support it, to gradually articulate motherhood as the agent of horror in the story. This paper analyzes the symbolic substratum of the text, that involves the ambivalent character of the mother archetype, merging the opposites of creation-destruction, life-death.
