  • The article discusses research which aimed to explore the limits of adaptation in several species in the family of poeciliid fishes that have managed to colonize creeks and rivers containing toxic levels of hydrogen sulfide. Topics covered include traits shared by the fish that aid survival in their deadly environment, analysis of their DNA which show they acquired similar adaptations via different molecular pathways, and how their extreme environment may spur speciation.
