This article reviews recent trends in the history of identification and then focuses on the pioneering work of Federico Olóriz in Spain. It covers a period that begins with his initial research on anthropometry and the «cephalic index» and ends with his early studies on fingerprinting at the outset of the twentieth century. Three additional issues are analyzed: the appropriation of the work of Juan Vucetich on dactyloscopy; the favorable scenario generated by police reforms around 1907; and the contribution of the young forensic physician Antonio Lecha -Marzo. The last two sections review the proposal for expanding fingerprinting technology into new domains and the subsequent controversy that took place.
