The failure of an ilmenite roaster at Richards Bay Minerals, the world’s largest producer of titanium slag, has raised fears about tightness of supply, but may create opportunities for others.The failure of an ilmenite roaster at Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) in South Africa is spreading concern about a potential shortfall in titanium slag production. An industry source suggested that, without roasting to purify it, RBM’s low-purity ilmenite would be too high in chromium oxide to be used to produce titanium slag (Ti-slag), unless it has stockpiles of roasted ilmenite.
