Sociedad de Quimica y Minera SA (SQM), the Chilean lithium, iodine, and potash producer, has opened up a new conciliation process with the government over a dispute regarding lithium exploration rights in the Salar de Atacama. The Chile Economic Development Agency (Corfo), the owner of the Salar de Atacama, is attempting to cancel SQM’s contract in the region, which would otherwise have run until 2030, over allegations that SQM failed in its contractual obligations. In January 2017, SQM paid more than $30 million of penalties to the US Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission to settle alleged accounting discrepancies after an investigation into reported illicit payments by SQM to political parties.
