Mineral Resources is shipping lithium spodumene Li2O 1-1.5% to China for further enhancement, the company told IM.
Australia's Minerals Resources Ltd started shipments of lithium spodumene in March from its Wodgina project in North Pilbara to China, where the material will be further purified.
Mineral Resources told IM that strong prices of lithium carbonate in China throughout the year - currently between $18.7-24.5/kg in the Chinese spot market according to IM 's 7 September market assessment - are making the shipments of lithium spodumene a feasible project.
Mineral Resources has been shipping 100,000 tpm lithium spodumene Li2O 1-1.5% in bulk from Port Hedland to China since March.
The Chinese buyer is enhancing the material to 5-6% Li2O content for further use in lithium carbonate production.
Minerals Resources did not disclose the price paid for the material nor the identity of the buyer.
