Muchos autores discuten la diferenciación normativa entre deber + infinitivo (modalidad deóntica) y deber de + infinitivo (modalidad epistémica). Si no opera esa distinción, interesa descubrir si se trata de un caso de variación libre o si la alternancia puede estar condicionada por otros factores. Los datos del corpus PRESEEA de Granada rechazan la diferenciación normativa y parecen apuntar a que cada comunidad de habla hispánica tiende a especializar las construcciones de manera diferente. El carácter periférico de la comunidad granadina, y los procesos de convergencia con las variedades centropeninsulares explican el dominio de la construcción con preposición y su evidente estratificación social.

Many authors discuss the normative differentiation between deber + infinitive (deontic modality) and deber de + inf (epistemic modality). If that distinction does not operate, it is interesting to find out whether it is a case of free variation or the alternation may be conditioned by other factors. The data from corpus PRESEEA of Granada reject the normative differentiation and suggest that each Spanish-speaking community tends to specialize constructions in a different way. The peripheral character of the community of Granada and the processes of convergence with the varieties of the center of the peninsula explain the preponderance of the construction with the preposition and its evident social stratification.
