China April TiO2 exports continue to surge

The recovery of the Chinese titanium dioxide (TiO2 ) industry this year has helped increase the export price as well as export volumes, according to the latest China customs data.
In April, China exported 64,848 tonnes of TiO2, up 18% year-on-year (y-o-y), but down 6% month-on-month (m-o-m). This is the 17th consecutive month that export volumes have increased on an annual basis. China's total exports in the January to April period rose by 16% y-o-y to 245,023 tonnes.
India was the top destination for Chinese exports of TiO2, followed by South Korea, Brazil, USA, Indonesia, Iran, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand. Only India and the USA recorded a y-o-y decrease in volumes, while all other destination had a marked increase.
Chinese TiO2 import/export price comparison Source: China Customs The average export price in April was $2,270.63/tonne, up 50% y-o-y from $1,511.28/tonne. It rose by 5% m-o-m. The average price has risen for the 14th consecutive month to its highest price since November 2013. The export price, once much lower than the import price, is now catching up.
In April, import volumes increased by 43% y-o-y and 6% m-o-m, respectively, to 18,681 tonnes. This is less than one third of the export quantity. Total imports in January to April increased by 37% y-o-y to 72,824 tonnes.
Taiwan was the top exporter to China, followed by Australia, the USA, Mexico, Germany, Japan and the UK.
The average import price jumped 11% y-o-y to $2,536.66/tonne, but was down 2% on a monthly basis. Since the average import price over the past 12 months has been largely stable at around $2,547/tonne, the export price has gained ground and was just $266.03 less in April. If the market continues to perform well it could reach the import price level in the future.
