Small island nations are at risk of severe drought as climate change causes sea levels to rise. Groundwater supplies are salinated as the sea swamps coastal areas, but there's another problem inland, where fresh water is being pushed above ground and vanishing into thin air. As the seas rise, they not only lap higher up the beach but also raise the level of the groundwater--sometimes above low points on the surface. This can cause existing lakes to expand and new ones to form, which speeds up evaporation
