Brazilian historiography which covers the colonial period has underestimated subjects of research regarding specific regions of the Portuguese America, differently from the Latin American historical production. The colonial region issue and its presumptions of analysis have gained many contributions with the various studies about the Spanish America between the sixteenth and the eighteenth centuries. This article aims to encourage the debate on the concept of colonial region, as well as to suggest theoretical and methodological frameworks that allow us to widen not only the research possibilities but also the historiographical production based on this conception.
