  • Mineral deliveries impacted; Refractory export market hit; Delivery volume halved Heightened security in cities around the Chinese capital Beijing during the "One Belt, One Road" summit restricted mineral deliveries in Tianjin in May.

    The "One Belt, One Road" 2017 summit, which was hosted in Beijing on 14 and 15 May, is one of the most important international events hosted by China this year.

    In order to ensure the smooth progress of the summit, which was aimed at promoting the development of overland and maritime routes from China to Europe, Beijing imposed widespread industrial shutdowns and tightened security checks in cities around the capital, including the large port city of Tianjin.

    Tightened security in Tianjin, one of the main export routes for refractory minerals out of China, impacted delivery volumes, according to market participants.

    "The logistic [control] is strict. To-and-fro delivery and vehicle traffic were restricted, the delivery volume has been halved," one Tianjin-based chromite buyer told IM.

    Tianjin postal administration implemented a temporary security program on delivery of all goods forcing all postal and delivery enterprises to carry out meticulous checks on parcels and cargoes, especially those sent to Beijing.
