The US fracking industry is back in action and with it has come a surge in demand for frac sand. It has not been an easy few years for producers of proppant minerals, but now companies that were facing bankruptcy only 18 months ago are "running at capacity" (p15) and have warned that bottlenecks which plagued the market in 2013 and 2014 could strangle the rebound.
But what lessons have been learned in the interim? And what state are these producers in to serve the market now? While some were forced to shut down, others just about kept the wheels turning in the belief that the sector would recover. There were those which continued to invest in plants and infrastructure and many swallowed a loss every quarter while their rail cars sat empty in storage. From this low base, how long will it take for them to climb back really?
