  • Few researchers in the history of psychology are as controversial as Harry Harlow. His most famous experiment was to socially isolate infant rhesus monkeys and give them a choice of two surrogate mothers: one made of bare wire that dispensed milk, and one of soft cloth that dispensed nothing. Here, Ariely and Chituc say that the ancient power of fear can lead people to downplay today's big risks and seek succor in unlikely places.
