Estimación de la magnitud de la satisfacción marital en función de los años de matrimonio

    En el presente estudio se pidió a 180 hombres y a 180 mujeres que estimaran la importancia relativa de 63 actividades comunes en el matrimonio.

    De acuerdo con los años de matrimonio, se asignó a 30 hombres y a 30 mujeres a cada uno de seis bloques de cinco años de matrimonio. Los participantes estimaron la importancia de las actividades usando el método de la estimación de las magnitudes –común en la psicofísica social– y los resultados se ajustaron con una función de poder. Se encontró que para los hombres el valor del exponente de la función de poder fue progresivamente más bajo conforme transcurrieron los años de casados. Para las mujeres, el valor del exponente varió como una función en forma de U con los años de casados. Estos resultados mostraron la utilidad del método de estimación de la magnitud y de la función de poder para describir una actividad social no métrica como la conducta marital.

    In this study 180 men and 180 women were asked to estimate the relative importance of 63 common activities in marriage. According to the years of marriage, men and women were assigned to six blocks of five years, each one of them made up of groups of 30.

    The participants estimated the importance of the activities by using the estimation-of-the-magnitude method that is common in social psychophysics and the results were adjusted with a function of power. It was found that for men, the value of the exponent of the function of power was progressively lower as the number of years of marriage elapsed. For women, the value of the exponent varied as a U-shape function in the years of marriage.

    These results showed the utility of the magnitude-estimation method and of the power function to describe a non-metric social activity such as marital behavior.
