  En 1808, la revolución liberal llegó sobrevenida a un país con pocos liberales. No nació del impulso de sus partidarios, que hallaron como un hecho consumado el derrumbe del entramado institucional del Antiguo Régimen tras la invasión napoleónica.

  Pocos y débiles, los liberales tardaron tres décadas en consolidar la revolución. La débil base social del liberalismo español condicionaría su consolidación y desarrollo en los años centrales del siglo XIX

  In 1808, the Liberal Revolution came about in a country with few liberals. It was not born from the impulse of its supporters, who found as a fait accompli the collapse of the institutional framework of the Old Regime after the Napoleonic invasion. Few and weak, the liberals took three decades to consolidate the revolution. The weak social base of liberalism would condition its consolidation and development in the middle years of the 19th century
