    La historia colonial de la Villa de San Cristóbal se halla profundamente vinculada a la historia de la ciudad de Mérida, incluso más allá de la colonia porque San Cristóbal formó parte de Mérida hasta el 14 de marzo de 1856, fecha en la cual se convierte en provincia del Táchira. Esta vinculación es un hecho que se resalta en este artículo, junto con los cambios en su estructura socioeconómica, así como la evolución política y administrativa de ambas provincias, cuyas vicisitudes estuvieron igualmente relacionadas con la creación de instituciones tales como la Real Audiencia, la Capitanía General de Venezuela, la Intendencia de Ejército y Real Hacienda, el Real Consulado y el Arzobispado de Caracas.

    The colonial history of the Villa of San Cristóbal is closely linked to the history of the city of Mérida even beyond colonial times because San Cristóbal was part of the jurisdiction of Mérida until 14 March, 1856, when it became part of the province of Táchira. This link is a fact that stands out in this article, together with the changes in its socioeconomic structure, as well as the political and administrative evolution of both provinces, whose vicissitudes were equally related to the creation of such institutions as the Intendency of the Army and the Royal Treasury, the Royal Audience and the Royal Consulate and the Archbishopric of Caracas.
