  • The article examines the kilogram and how since 1889 the measurement has been defined by reference to a single platinum-iridium cylinder in Paris, France. Particular focus is given to how this platinum-iridium has been losing mass. Additional topics discussed include the National Institute of Standards and Technology, official metrology research around the world, and the history of measurement and physical constants.
