  • The article examines technetium 99m, an obscure radioactive atom that is used in medicine. Particular focus is given to how the world's supply of this atom is running out as aging nuclear reactors that produce the material are being shut down. Additional topics discussed include single-photon emission computed tomography, how tomography is used in diagnostic testing and the journal's prior article on the subject "Positron-Emission Tomography," published in the October 1980 issue.
