André Chénier’s poetry gives the imagination a great deal of importance: conceived as a form of dispossession of the self, the violence and the autonomy the poet, rendered passive by its works, lends it, make it akin to a crisis of reason. Raptures, impulses, disorganisation of the faculties, its symptoms link it to the madness that captures all minds around 1800 : from the quest for a less rigid syntax to the fashion in the theatres for “madwomen” through the political convulsions that confuse the public, the signs of a loss of rules and direction are numerous at the turn of the century. Chénier, to whom this context is fully relevant, played an important role by holding the mirror of his texts to the excesses and astonishments of the love, family and political imaginings that are the source of his inspiration. What if his works intended to be, through the ruptures and absences that characterise them, the reflection of the worrisome songs he was hearing all around ?

La poésie d’André Chénier accorde une importance particulière à l’imagination : conçue comme une dépossession de soi, elle s’apparente, par sa violence et l’autonomie dont la dote le poète rendu passif par ses assauts, à une crise qui invalide la raison. Transport, élans, désorganisation des facultés, ses symptômes la rattachent à la folie qui s’empare des esprits au moment 1800 : de la recherche d’une syntaxe plus souple, capable d’épouser les élucubrations des âmes poétiques, à la vogue des « folles » au théâtre, en passant par les convulsions politiques qui égarent les contemporains, les signes abondent d’un dérèglement et d’une perte des repères au tournant du siècle. Chénier, pleinement inscrit dans ce contexte, y joue un rôle moteur en tendant le miroir de ses textes aux excès et aux stupeurs des imaginations, amoureuses, familiales ou politiques, qui nourrissent son inspiration. Et si son oeuvre se voulait, par ses fractures et ses lacunes, la partition la plus à l’écoute des chants inquiétants qui surgissent autour de lui ?
