The 2017 presidential and parliamentary elections saw a successful challenge to established parties of government from a new centrist politics. This article analyses the novelty of Macron’s movement and compares it with the offer from the left, both the mainstream Socialist Party (PS) and the radical populism of Mélenchon’s France Insoumise (FI). The future prospects of the Macron presidency and his party depend on the success of his economic policies, whereas the PS and FI must battle for leadership of a seriously weakened opposition. The lessons of this campaign are relevant far beyond France.
