Based on the revision of results from research conducted in different comparable professional and organizational settings in Belgium, Québec-Canada and Catalonia- Spain, this contribution analyzes male and female use of parental leave and other leave arrangements for caring purposes, in different life-phases and institutional contexts (public sector, private non-profit, private for profit).
It aims at broadening the discussion on leave, care and gender equality from a life course perspective (early parenthood versus later care commitments), using tools as the Work-Life Balance concept and concluding on prospective scenarios for gender equality developments in ’multiactive societies’ analytical frameworks.
e conclude that professional environments and organizations have a mediating effect; the work family interactions an interferences can be better understood in different professional contexts. Better understanding of professions and specific careers may help to improve institutional design of Parental Leave, Care Leave and career break schemes. We suggest to take into account these professional and life course dimensions for policy evaluation.
