  • This article explores the circulation and rhetorical legacy of songs through analysis of the “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” As both written and performed artifacts, songs undergo constant change through rewriting and appropriation as they are adapted to new cultural contexts and audiences. In turn, this gives rise to new meanings and interpretations of songs as they circulate. The “Battle Hymn” itself moves from religious hymn to marching tune to abolitionist anthem to our modern usage, highlighting the circulation of the song to create a lasting rhetorical legacy
