A rich mix of rare saline water species has been found thriving in ponds formed in second world war bomb craters in Hungary. This backs the case for conserving such artificial ponds, especially as natural ones are being lost across Europe to make way for farmland and city growth. The biodiversity was comparable with that of naturally occurring saline ponds called soda pans that are unique to this region of Europe
