Cosmic ruler could probe dark energy

  • Measuring cosmological distances is tricky if one's ruler isn't up to scratch. A new cosmological standard ruler could help figure out why the universe is expanding at an accelerating rate. Glenn Starkman at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio and his colleagues have come up with a new cosmic ruler. Instead of following the galaxies motions, the team measure distance relative to an unmoving mathematical midpoint in the baryon acoustic oscillations called the linear point. Starkman says the technique is up to four times more accurate than existing methods.
