Só ou acompanhado? A emigração para os territórios ultrama-rinos nos séculos XVI e XVII

    Using Vila do Conde parish and notary records, this article seeks to determine the marital status of migrants who left Portugal between 1560 and 1651 to Overseas Empire, such as the Atlantic archipelagos, Africa, Asia and America. We try to understand the family struc-ture, in order to understand if this emigration was done individually or if the relatives were in-volved, either in a joint departure or through a later union in the destination territory. Finally, we will verify the family composition of migrants and the influence that this may have on the choice of a destination, due to their characteristics, such as the weather and the distance to the kingdom.

    Neste artigo procura-se apurar, na documentação paroquial e notarial de Vila do Conde, o estado civil dos emigrantes que partiam para os arquipélagos atlânticos, África, Ásia e América, entre 1560 e 1651. Procura-se perceber a estrutura familiar, de forma a compreen-dermos se esta emigração era feita individualmente ou se contava com a participação dos pa-rentes, quer numa partida conjunta, quer através de uma posterior união no território de destino. Verificaremos então a composição familiar dos emigrantes e a influência que esta pode ter na escolha de um determinado destino, atendendo às suas características, tais como o clima e a distância em relação ao reino.
