    In 1895 Ernesto da Silva, militant socialist and composer typographer, premieres at the Teatro do Príncipe Real of Lisbon, O Capital. The drama is part of a project to revitalize militant theater and to construct a dramaturgy for the education of workers, not forgetting the playful side. It was the first “socialist” work of its kind, initiating a trend interrupted by the premature death of its author in 1903. This article aims to rescue the text of oblivion, describing it within the dominant literary aesthetic and the development of theater in the Portuguese Socialist Party.

    En 1895 Ernesto da Silva, militante socialista y compositor tipógrafo, estrena en el Teatro do Príncipe Real de Lisboa, O Capital. El drama se encuadra dentro de un proyecto de dinamización del teatro militante y de construcción de una dramaturgia destinada a la educación de los obreros, sin olvidar la vertiente lúdica. Fue la primera obra “socialista” en su género, iniciadora de una tendencia interrumpida por la prematura muerte de su autor en 1903. Este artículo tiene como objetivo rescatar el texto del olvido, describiéndolo dentro de la estética literária dominante y del desarrollo del teatro en el Partido Socialista Portugués.
