    During the Middle Ages, the region between the rivers Lima and Minho (Northwest of Portugal), in spite of being Portuguese in civil and political terms, was part of the Galician diocese of Tui in religious issues. When the Hospitallers felt the necessity of founding a commandery in order to better administer their estate in the region, it seems they attributed the ancestral limits of the Portuguese part of the said diocese, respecting its own characteristics. In what regards the origin of this new commandery, based in Távora, there exist some signs that allow us to better understand inherent aspects of the process of its foundation as well as an approximate date of it

    Durante a Idade Média, o Entre-Lima-e-Minho, embora português na esfera civil e política, formava parte da diocese galega de Tui em termos religiosos. Quando os hospitalários sentiram necessidade de criar uma comenda para melhor gerirem os seus bens na região, parecem ter-lhe atribuído os limites ancestrais da parte portuguesa da dita diocese, respeitando as suas características próprias. Quanto aos primórdios desta nova comenda, sediada em Távora, existem alguns indícios que nos permitem entrever aspetos inerentes ao processo da sua instituição, bem como uma data aproximada da mesma.
