  • Levitan comments on preliminary budget outlines from US president Donald Trump that have shocked the science community. Everything from the National Institutes of Health to NASA's earth science missions would get a buzz cut. The impulsivity and lack of long-term thinking that places science at odds with politics seems less a feature and more a tenet of Trump's view. All the cuts Trump proposed would have an immediate effect--less spending by the government. But their long-term outcomes apparently don't move the needle for any number of elected officials. There's a chance such cuts will accelerate the pace of impacts until it becomes impossible to ignore them
