  • Pearce talks about people's fear on the health effects of Fukushima's nuclear disaster. According to radiation health management adviser for Fukushima prefecture Shunichi Yamashita, fear can be very damaging. After Fukushima, he saw part of his role as being an intermediary between the government and the public. But he got into trouble for telling people to smile. He said it at a public meeting 10 days after the accident. Everybody was very stressed and in the middle of chaos. Many had been forced to evacuate. He said it was bad to worry so much. They should try to be at ease with themselves. Many people thought even a tiny amount of radiation was dangerous, despite the natural background radiation they are all exposed to.
