The article looks at assessment in online foreign language courses, discussing how the Internet offers opportunities for forms of assessment and associated learning experiences that are different from, and maybe superior to, those available in regular classroom settings. It discusses the washback effect, or the effect of the implementation of high-stakes testing on teaching and curriculum, suggesting it can be a positive effect. Assessment of oral communication in online courses is discussed.
