The article looks at the evaluation of online foreign language instructional programs, including both online courses offered by colleges and universities and commercial Internet-based language-learning products. The author notes the absence of data on the outcomes of such programs and says much additional research is needed. Topics include oral language proficiency, the commercial language program Rosetta Stone, and the use of videoconferencing in the teaching of less commonly taught languages.
