  • The author presents a response to the article "Looking Into a Crystal Ball: Is Requiring High-Stakes Language Proficiency Tests Really Going to Improve World Language Education?," by Brigid M. Burke, particularly commenting on the debate between language proficiency and desire to teach as it relates to licensure standards for modern language teachers in the U.S. He discusses the importance of hiring motivated and passionate teachers, the need for language teachers with a high level of language proficiency to ensure a high-quality education, and issues of performance assessment.
