  • The article presents the author's personal views and reflections regarding the status and trends of applied linguistics scholarship as of the Winter of 2010, drawing on his experiences as an editor of a research journal. Commentary is particularly directed toward questions on the characteristics of academic publishing with the internet and other communication technologies. The benefits and challenges of open access publishing are then systematically reviewed.
