The essay presents the author's personal views and reflections regarding the status and trends of applied linguistics scholarship as of the Winter of 2010, drawing on his experiences as the editor of the issue and journal. An overview of the history of "The Modern Language Journal" is given. Discussion is offered commenting on the editorial policies and procedures used by the journal. Conclusions are given highlighting existing problems and suggesting possible changes for improvement.
