Author Marco Peresani at the University of Ferrara, Italy and his colleagues have excavated the Rio Secco and Fomane caves in northern Italy and find out that cave bears were hunted and butchered by Neanderthals. Peresani hopes to extract DNA from the teeth which could tell people more about how Neanderthal genes equipped them to survive the ice age, and whether modern humans and Neanderthals interbred at this time.
