Astronauts on a mission to Mars or beyond may be able to survive on plants watered with their own urine. A team led by Federico Maggi at the University of Sydney in Australia calculated how these plants take up nutrients from human urine, using computer models of dwarf wheat and soya plants. Urine largely met the plants' nutritional needs without high levels of harmful by-products or emissions.
